Kualitas air dapat diukur dengan cara manual dan digital. Cara manual untuk mengukur kualitas air adalah dengan melihat air yang diukur secara langsung dan membandingkan antara air yang diukur dengan parameter-parameter tertentu seperti Apakah air yang diukur jernih atau berwarna, air yang diukur bersih dan bebas dari benda apapun selain air, apakah tidak berkeruh, apakah tidak berbau atau justru berbau, apakah air tersebut terdapat hewan kecil atau tidak dan sebagainya. Jika air tersebut bersih dan bebas dari benda atau hewan kecil apapun, maka bisa dikatakan air tersebut mempunyai kualitas yang cukup baik, namun adakalanya air yang jernih dan bersih tersebut mempunyai kandungan zat kimia yang berwarna sama dengan air dan bisa jadi kandungan zat kimia tersebut berbahaya bagi manusia.

Sensor akan menangkap berbagai keadaan di air dan menyalinkan ke dalam data logger dalam bentuk data, setelah itu data logger akan memproses data yang berasal dari sensor dan mengeluarkan data hasil pengukuran kedalam memori internal untuk disimpan. Data dapat dilihat secara langsung dan otomatis melalui aplikasi alat pengukur yang sudah disediakan oleh perusahaan produsen alat pengukur.
